SUMMARY:Honoring Indigenous Futures with Storytelling: Oil & Water
DESCRIPTION:Join Brooklyn Demme\, son of the late Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs & Philadelphia)\, to watch and discuss two documentary shorts\, “Protection Not Protest” and “The Community of the River Wachirpas.” Each thought-provoking film depicts indigenous communities’ inspiring struggle to secure clean water from contamination by the oil industry. \nProtection Not Protest: The People of Standing Rock \nIn 2016\, the Lakota people of the Standing Rock Reservation had to defend their watershed and sacred burial sites from an invading oil company. This short and impactful film by Academy Award winner Jonathan Demme listens to the voices of the water protectors urging us to defend the sacred. \nThe Community of the River Wachirpas \nThis intimate short film brings viewers into the heart of the Amazon\, where oil contamination is risking the lives and culture of an Achuar community living on the Wachirpas River. SUMMARY:Conversation with Author and Illustrator Peter Sis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with celebrated author and illustrator Peter Sis. An exhibit showing Peter Sis’ works-in-progress will be held simultaneously in Putnam Valley Free Library’s Community Room. \nThe recipient of numerous awards\, Peter Sis is\, among other things\, a seven-time winner of The New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year and a three times Caldecott Honoree. He is the first children’s book illustrator to win the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship. \nPeter Sis’ newest book\, Nicky & Vera: A Quiet Hero of the Holocaust and the Children He Rescued\, tells the story of Nicky (Nicholas Winston)\, a quiet Englishman who\, in December 1938\, cancelled his vacation to go to Prague\, where he ultimately organized the transportation of almost 700 children to safety. He never told anyone\, until 50 years later\, his wife discovered his records\, kept in boxes in the attic. \nPeter Sís weaves Nicky’s experiences and the story of one of the children he saved\, Vera Gissing. “The story unfolds on parallel tracks\, beginning\, for both Nicky and Vera — an unusual and exquisite narrative choice — in childhood.
