DESCRIPTION:In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries\, American Jews have increasingly told nostalgic stories about Eastern European Jewish immigration to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. In her book Beyond the Synagogue: Jewish Nostalgia as Religious Practice\, religious studies professor Rachel B. Gross examines American Jewish longing for the past expressed through artisanal delis\, picture books\, historic synagogues\, and Jewish genealogy. She argues that these nostalgic activities should be understood as religious practices\, illuminating how many American Jews are finding and making meaning within American Judaism today. Some of the greatest movies ever made were about lawyers\, the law\, and the courtroom setting. This presentation will look at the most notable films and scenes in history and discuss their influence on culture\, their representations of changing times and changing laws\, and how they use the court cinematically as a setting for incredible storytelling. Films discussed will include To Kill A Mockingbird\, Inherit The Wind\, 12 Angry Men\, A Few Good Men\, My Cousin Vinny\, The Verdict\, Philadelphia\, and Judgement at Nuremberg. \nPresented by: Greg Blank is a Long Island based filmmaker\, film historian and lecturer with over 15 years of experience as a producer\, director\, cinematographer and editor with a B.A. in Communications from Florida Atlantic University as well as New York Film Academy. DESCRIPTION:All bodies in the solar system which receive light from the Sun cast a shadow into space. When the shadow of one body falls upon another\, an eclipse occurs. When the Moon wanders into the shadow cast into space by our home planet\, we are then treated to a lunar eclipse. \nAn eclipse of the Moon is a dramatic natural event which has been described in records going back for centuries in many civilizations. Ancient astronomers or wise men discovered certain cycles of occurances of eclipses\, which then allowed prediction. Accurate prediction could then command power and prestige. On Sunday night\, May 15th\, a Total Eclipse of the Moon will take place. Here in the Northeast US\, we will have ringside seats for this event\, as the total phase of this eclipse will occur well up in the southern sky during the late evening hours. SUMMARY:Carol Burnett: The Grand Dame of Comedy
DESCRIPTION:From her humble beginnings in San Antonio\, Texas to her instant fame on Broadway in Once Upon A Mattress\, Carol Burnett is best known for taking television by storm first on The Garry Moore Show and later on her own eleven season Emmy award winning variety program. Join us as we recount the history of Carol Burnett\, from her troubles with alcoholic parents to her continued success in television. We will screen clips from her TV show plus see interviews with Carol and the cast including Tim Conway and Vicki Lawrence. \nPresented by: Keith Crocker is a Long Island\, NY based filmmaker and film historian. He attended the New York Institute of Technology from 1984 through 1988\, where he majored in film and TV production. Keith’s first job in cinema was making short Super 8mm films used for aversion therapy in phobia clinics. In 1993\, Keith made his first feature film\, which was based on Edgar Allan Poe’s Murders in the Rue Morgue. During this time\, he also worked as a motion picture projectionist and started a video on demand company. 30 years later\, that business is still running. From 1987 through 2005\, Keith was editor of the fanzine The Journal\, which published 25 issues before going into hiatus. In 2008\, Keith released Blitzkreig\, which was a WWII based film. During this time\, he was also the co-founder of Wildeye Releasing. He left Wildeye in 2012. Keith has been teaching adult education at Nassau Community College for the past 18 year has also been giving seminars on motion pictures to public libraries and community centers for the past 25 years. SUMMARY:The Jewish Museum Virtual Tour: The Hare with Amber Eyes
DESCRIPTION:The Hare with Amber Eyes evokes the story of the Ephrussi family—celebrated in the 2010 memoir and The New York Times bestseller of the same name by Edmund de Waal—and showcases the breadth and depth of their illustrious collection. This exhibition explores the family’s rise to prominence in the first half of the nineteenth century\, to the inter-war years\, and finally\, World War II\, when they lost their fortune and collection to Nazi looting. We’ll get a glimpse of Ephrussi’s collections including artworks by Fragonard\, Morisot\, Monet\, Moreau\, and Renoir. At the exhibition’s centerpiece is the extraordinary collection of Japanese netsuke\, miniature carved sculptures of the Edo Period\, hidden by a maid from German officials in her mattress during World War II\, and later returned to the family.
