SUMMARY:Somers Library Launches a Classics Book Club!
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever asked yourself “I wish I had read that one!” or “I should read that one again!”? Book clubs are increasing\, and reading can be a safe and productive activity during COVID. But why would you read or reread a book title termed classic? In 1986\, Italo Calvino wrote: “A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say.” \nThis is your opportunity to join us as we start a new bimonthly book group on Tuesday nights beginning September 21. Our list of reads begins with Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. Copies of books to be discussed will be reserved for members of the group. Call the library to reserve your copy. \nRegister for the Classic Book Club here. \n

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Julie Satow – The Plaza
DESCRIPTION:From the moment in 1907 when New York millionaire Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt strode through the Plaza Hotel’s revolving doors as its first guest\, to the afternoon in 2007 when a mysterious Russian oligarch paid a record price for the hotel’s largest penthouse\, the 18-story white marble edifice at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street has radiated wealth and luxury. \nFor some\, the hotel evokes images of F. Scott Fitzgerald frolicking in the Pulitzer Fountain\, or Eloise\, the impish young guest who pours water down the mail chute. But the true stories captured in the newly-published The Plaza: The Secret Life of America’s Most Famous Hotel also include dark\, hidden secrets. \nJoin us to learn more from award-winning journalist Julie Satow\, who pulls back the curtain on Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball and The Beatles’ first stateside visit and reveals how\, during the Great Depression\, a few dowager widows were the lifeline that saved the hotel\, and how foreign money and anonymous shell companies have transformed the iconic guest rooms into condominiums shielding ill-gotten gains. \nTo register and receive the link\, please click: Author Talk \n

SUMMARY:Author Talk: “My Melancholy Baby”
DESCRIPTION: “My Melancholy Baby” with Michael G. Garber \nWe welcome back our Sunday Author Talk program with a visit by local resident Michael G. Garber\, author of the recently released My Melancholy Baby: The First Ballads of the Great American Songbook. Michael titled his book after the 1911 song “My Melancholy Baby\,” and he will focus on it for this talk. A book signing will follow his presentation. \nMichael lectures on the performing arts\, film\, and media\, and is a specialist in Tin Pan Alley and the American musical on stage and screen. He did the final proofing and indexing for the book in England\, where he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Winchester. He got “stuck” there by the pandemic and has happily returned to the USA just in time for the release of this book – hot off the press! \nPlease register for Michael G. Garber author talk here.
