20th-Century Ukrainian Artists: Pioneers of Modernity
What do artists Sonia Delaunay, Vladimir Baranov-Rossiné, Alexander Archipenko, Chaim Gross, Ben Zion, and Louise Nevelson have in common? They are all pioneers of modern Western Art who came from Ukraine. They left their birth country for political reasons and joined international art centers in Paris and New York. There they developed new artistic languages and broke down boundaries between mediums. Their innovations included fabric art, wood carving, early assemblage, and light projections. While they worked abroad and were part of an international art scene, memories of Ukrainian costumes, dance, landscape, and colors informed their art. Led by Art Historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo
