Schlemiels, and Schmendricks: How Yiddish Captured the Popular Imagination, as Seen Through Comic Strips
Mainstream comic strips are a part of American popular culture. As in all media, Yiddish expressions – from “bupkes” to “tushie,” from “goniff” to “schlub” — are spoken by people (and on occasion, animals) who are not identifiably Jewish, in contexts meant to be enjoyed and appreciated by audiences from many different backgrounds. Join us as we look at several dozen comic strips with an eye and ear toward assessing a phenomenon that might otherwise escape notice and analysis. Led by Leonard Greenspoon, Ph.D., author and Philip M. and Ethel Klutznick Chair in Jewish Civilization, Creighton University
