Housing-Related Disability Accomodations and Rent-Freezing through SCRIE and DRIE

The New York Legal Assistance Group’s (NYLAG’s) senior supervising attorney Abby Biberman will present on the different laws that protect individuals with disabilities in housing. This program will empower tenants to request reasonable accommodations from landlords and to respond to wrongful denials of reasonable requests. Participants will also learn about who qualifies for the NYC Rent Freeze Program, which includes the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) and Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE). These exemptions allow tenants in rent-stabilized apartments to have their rent frozen at their current level and to be exempt from future rent increases. We will cover eligibility requirements, the application process, benefits, and renewals.
