The History of Postcards
Greetings from the Newberry Library: The History of Postcards
Postcards were one of the most popular and inexpensive forms of communication in the twentieth century, and remain in circulation today. They are so common that they can be taken for granted. But why have billions of them been made and sent since the late nineteenth century, and how exactly did they get made? The Newberry Library in Chicago holds one of the world’s largest collections of postcards. In this program Will Hansen, Director of Reader Services and Curator of Americana at the Newberry, will discuss the history of picture postcards and their production, with illustrations from the Newberry’s collections.
