  • Writing During the Pandemic: Revision, Reflection and Zoom

    Virtual discussion and reading by various authors:
    Caroline Leavitt is the New York Times bestselling author of 12 novels including Pictures of You and the Good Morning America online pick With or Without You. She is a book critic for People and AARP and she has a column in Psychology Today.

    Susan Henderson is a Hawthornden International Fellow, a six-time Pushcart Prize nominee, and the recipient of an Academy of American Poets Award. She is the author of the novels Up from the Blue and The Flicker of Old Dreams.

    Harriet Shenkman is Prof. Emerita at C.U.N.Y and serves on the Advisory Board of the Women's National Book Assoc. NYC. Her poetry awards include the Women's National Book Assoc. 2013 Poetry Writing Contest, The Women Who Write 2013 International Poetry, Raynes Poetry Competition.

  • Chappaqua Library Art Series: Dia Beacon

    Virtual Presentation

    In May 2003, Dia Art Foundation opened Dia Beacon in a former Nabisco box-printing plant. The museum presents Dia’s collection of art from the 1960s to the present as well as special exhibitions and public programs. The collection is mainly focused on minimalism and conceptual art. The grounds and location on the banks of the Hudson River are all part of the experience.

  • Chappaqua Library Art Lecture Series

    Virtual Presentation

    Julie Mehretu (b. 1970, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) creates new forms and finds unexpected resonances in her mixed media paintings. Drawing from the histories of art and human civilization, her imagery has representational origins, but remains steadfastly abstract.

    This mid-career survey presents an overview of 30 large-scale paintings and 40 works on paper that examine how forces such as migration, capitalism and climate change impact human populations and possibilities. Julie Mehretu through Aug 8, 2021 at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

  • The Road Not Taken: Edward Lansdale and the American Tragedy in Vietnam

    In this epic biography of Edward Lansdale (1908– 1987), the man said to be the fictional model for Graham Greene’s The Quiet American, best-selling historian Max Boot demonstrates how Lansdale pioneered a “hearts and mind” diplomacy, first in the Philippines, then in Vietnam. It was a visionary policy that, as Boot reveals, was ultimately crushed by America’s giant military bureaucracy, steered by elitist generals and blueblood diplomats who favored troop build-ups and napalm bombs over winning the trust of the people.
