  • The Ever Changing Lower Eastside

    Virtual Presentation

    Join retired teacher and travel expert, Sheila Taub as she teaches us about the evolution of New York City's Lower Eastside.

    The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle the Lower East Side followed by Irish and German immigrants. Beginning in 1880 large waves of Eastern European Jews and Italians began arriving. Understand the poor living conditions they endured. View the buildings and synagogues they produced. See what remains of the Jewish Lower East Side and how the neighborhood is rapidly changing. Construction cranes are everywhere. The neighborhood is teeming with luxury condos, upscale eateries and art galleries.

  • An Afternoon with Nehemiah Persoff

    Virtual Presentation

    Mr. Persoff, now 102 years old, has appeared in more than 40 films and over 300 television episodes during his long, illustrious career. An inaugural member of The Actor's Studio, he has shared the screen with a who's who of American screen legends including James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Barbra Streisand and countless others. His credits include the role of Little Napoleon in Some Like it Hot, Reb Mendel in Yentl, and the voice of Papa Mousekewitz in An American Tail. 

    Mr. Persoff's memoir, The Many Faces of Nehemiah was published in 2021. Mr. Persoff will be interviewed by actor, director and playwright Mark F. Jenkins, lifetime member of The Actor's Studio, Co-founder of Freehold Theatre Lab and former professor and Head of the Professional Actor Training Program at the University of Washington where he is now Professor Emeritus. Mark is honored to be in conversation with Mr. Persoff for this special program

  • The Night of the Red Moon: with Meterologist Joe Rao

    All bodies in the solar system which receive light from the Sun cast a shadow into space. When the shadow of one body falls upon another, an eclipse occurs. When the Moon wanders into the shadow cast into space by our home planet, we are then treated to a lunar eclipse.

    An eclipse of the Moon is a dramatic natural event which has been described in records going back for centuries in many civilizations. Ancient astronomers or wise men discovered certain cycles of occurances of eclipses, which then allowed prediction. Accurate prediction could then command power and prestige. On Sunday night, May 15th, a Total Eclipse of the Moon will take place. Here in the Northeast US, we will have ringside seats for this event, as the total phase of this eclipse will occur well up in the southern sky during the late evening hours. In this presentation we’ll provide all the details on how to best prepare for this remarkable celestial sight, as well as talk about other important eclipse events that will occur in the near future.
