  • A Sunrise Scimitar: virtual presentation

    Early risers in the Northeast US on Thursday morning, June 10th, will - weather conditions permitting - be treated to the most unusual sunrise of their lives: We will not see a yellow-orange circle of light, but a large solar eclipse which will transform the sun into a fiery scimitar!

    From the Tri-State Area, sunrise is at 5:24 am, and a maximum eclipse comes nine minutes later when eighty percent of the Sun's diameter will be obscured. Such a circumstance is very rare, having occurred only twice in the past 150 years (in September 1875 and October 1959).

    In this presentation, meteorologist Joe Rao will discuss the mechanics of what causes eclipses as well as look at events coming our way in the future, including the total solar eclipse that will be visible from upstate New York and New England in April, 2024. This program is presented in partnership with the Town of Pelham Public Library, the Somers Library and the Warner Library.

  • Local Author Talk with Jordan Salama

    Virtual Presentation

    Join us for a book discussion with local author and travel writer Jordan Salama. His debut book, Every Day the River Changes (published in November 2021), is an exhilarating travelogue for a new generation about a journey along Colombia’s Magdalena River, exploring life by the banks of a majestic river now at risk, and how a country recovers from conflict. Jordan Salama’s work has appeared in The New York Times, National Geographic, and Scientific American. Salama is a 2019 graduate of Princeton University (and Pelham Memorial High School graduate!) This event will be held on Zoom, and registration is required.

  • The Discovery of a Masterpiece with Mallory Mortillaro

    Mallory Mortillaro serves as the Curator of Collections for the Hartley Dodge Foundation in Madison, NJ. While she was cataloging the artwork housed inside of the Hartley Dodge Memorial she uncovered a masterpiece that had been lost to the art world since the 1930’s. After a year of research the piece was authenticated as an official work by Auguste Rodin. Mallory will share the story of how a simple art cataloging project evolved into a search for a mysterious piece’s provenance, and became one of the biggest art finds in recent history. This event will take place on Zoom.
