  • Historic Harlem: 1600s thru the 1920’s & Beyond

    Virtual Presentation

    Join us for a very picturesque prowl through historic Harlem, once a bucolic estate setting for gracious mansions, later a hub for European immigrants, and then the destination of southern Blacks fleeing Jim Crow and migrating to the North in pursuit of jobs and rights. Together we'll visit settings associated with all of these phases of Harlem's history, while concentrating on the emergence of the Harlem Renaissance. We will 'walk' past Sylvan Terrace, the Morris-Jumel mansion, the Triple Nickel, Trinity Church Cemetery, Hamilton Grange, Hamilton Heights, the historic City College campus, Strivers Row, and the Abyssinian Baptist Church, and see sites where well-known Harlem residents lived. We'll end this enlightening tour at a special pavilion to view historic WPA era murals depicting the lives of Harlem's Black residents. Led by Deb Zelcer, Prowler Tours

  • The Harlem Renaissance

    Virtual Presentation

    Harlem flourished in the 1920s, energized by the Great Migration of African Americans from the South who were looking for jobs in New York City. The first generation of photographers, painters, and muralists tapped into new calls for expressing racial pride and optimism; the second worked through the Depression and World War II, carrying on this inspiration and deepening the depictions. This is the story of the art of the Harlem Renaissance, which is still influencing artists today.

    As we embark on a journey through the art of the Harlem Renaissance, our virtual showcase will include:

    • A look at the diverse styles of artists working in Harlem from the 1920s to 1940s
    • An overview of two generations of Harlem Renaissance artists — some well-known, others less familiar
    • An understanding of how contemporary African American artists stand on the shoulders of these breakthrough artists
