From Marching Bands to Big Bands

The sounds of marching bands, combined with Ragtime's syncopated rhythms, may have led to the rise of Jazz. Yet the 1920s' concept of jazz is not the same one we hold today around this beloved genre. Join us for this special four-week workshop as we trace the development and definition of jazz all the way from Dixieland to the sound of Big Bands.

When one thinks of “Jews and jazz," names such as Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Stan Getz and others come to mind, American-born all. But what of the earlier generation of European-born Jewish musicians — klezmorim — who, upon arrival, were obliged to learn two new languages: English and jazz? How did they navigate through a new challenging soundscape to become viable parts of their new land?
By examining the early “jazz” offerings of klezmer pioneers like Lt. Joseph Frankel, Harry Kandel, and Sammy Musiker among others, we witness how that first generation took to jazz as both a social and musical gateway to speed up their – and their audience’s — acculturation from old world to new.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Songbook is a vast innovative body of original work, produced over the past decade. With members such as Victor Goines, Ted Nash, Sherman Irby, Marcus Printup, Vincent Gardner, and Wynton Marsalis, this concert is a collection of the JLCO's finest and most stylistically diverse compositions.
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and South African musicians will perform essential South African music, with each song chosen by a guest performer. Special guests include three New York-based South African vocalists - Nonhlanhla Kheswa, Melanie Scholtz and Jazz at Lincoln Center fan-favorite Vuyo Sotashe-plus five top instrumentalists from South Africa.
