  • Manhattan’s Bridges

    Virtual Presentation

    Manhattan's first bridge, the wooden King's Bridge, opened in 1693. Today, twenty bridges link the island to the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx, and to New Jersey. Join lecturer, author and photographer, Kevin Woyce as he tells the stories of how and why the most famous bridges were built, including the High Bridge of the Croton Aqueduct, the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg, Queensboro, and Triborough Bridges, and the George Washington Bridge. This program is illustrated with original photographs and historic images of Manhattan's iconic bridges-past and present-and of the city they helped to shape.

  • Tour of Essex Market, Manhattan

    Virtual Presentation

    Meet cheesemongers, bakers, baristas, grocers, and restaurateurs on this virtual tour of the Essex Market on Manhattan's Lower East Side. This historic market was opened in 1940 as part of Mayor LaGuardia's citywide program to build new wholesale and retail food markets, and get pushcarts off the streets. In 2019, the market moved into a beautiful new facility on the south side of Delancey Street that boasts over 40 purveyors of prepared foods, specialty items, and grocery staples. We'll learn about the market's history and go live to Essex Market to visit with a diverse range of small businesses that call the market home today.
