• Predicting the Past: Zohar Studios

    Virtual Presentation

The Lost Years - An Intergenerational trip to the Contemporary Jewish Museum

Join us as we journey to San Francisco with our DOROT College Interns, and visit Predicting the Past: Zohar Studios, The Lost Years, an exhibit at the Contemporary Jewish Museum. Our tour will examine the storytelling, narrative, and the malleability of photography through an immersive virtual gallery experience. We’ll explore the 19th century through the advent of photography, its humor, magic, and multiplicity of meanings. We’ll also have an opportunity to reflect on how this 19th-century technology influenced our understanding of history and reality, and what stories photographs tell us. Before, during, and after the tour, you’ll have an opportunity to work in intergenerational pairs and share your own photographs and memories. Space is Limited!

  • Women and Photography: 1924-1965

    Virtual Presentation

In pre-war Berlin and Paris, some young women who were part of the avant-garde movement were intrigued by the possibilities of a new new medium: photography. Unlike painting and sculpture, photography was full of new possibilities and still free of an established, male hierarchy. But the creative freedom these modern women were enjoying in Europe would soon be replaced by fascism. Some, including Lee Miller, would relocate to London, whereas others came to New York, where after the war, they would work for magazines before facing the realities of McCarthyism. Even though the groundbreaking work of these women still resonates today, only a few, like Berenice Abbott, would get some of the recognition they deserved in their lifetimes, others still remain in relative obscurity.
