  • Going to the Dogs

    Virtual Presentation

The Phoenix Art Museum Presents: Going to the Dogs

Dogs have been muses to artists for thousands of years, from ancient cave dwellings to pop-art installations. Greeks and Romans favored dogs as pets and valued them for their faithfulness and courage, while artists from Picasso to Warhol were fascinated by their beloved pets. Dogs intrigue us, engage us emotionally and are living symbols of protection, loyalty, companionship and unconditional love. We’re going to take a look at how artists have shown their admiration and respect for canines in paintings, drawings, sculptures and photography from the 1st Century B.C. to the present. • Author Talk: Julie Satow – The Plaza

    Virtual Presentation

From the moment in 1907 when New York millionaire Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt strode through the Plaza Hotel's revolving doors as its first guest, to the afternoon in 2007 when a mysterious Russian oligarch paid a record price for the hotel's largest penthouse, the 18-story white marble edifice at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street has radiated wealth and luxury.

For some, the hotel evokes images of F. Scott Fitzgerald frolicking in the Pulitzer Fountain, or Eloise, the impish young guest who pours water down the mail chute. But the true stories captured in the newly-published The Plaza: The Secret Life of America’s Most Famous Hotel also include dark, hidden secrets.

Join us to learn more from award-winning journalist Julie Satow, who pulls back the curtain on Truman Capote's Black and White Ball and The Beatles' first stateside visit and reveals how, during the Great Depression, a few dowager widows were the lifeline that saved the hotel, and how foreign money and anonymous shell companies have transformed the iconic guest rooms into condominiums shielding ill-gotten gains.

  • Somers Library Launches a Classics Book Club!

    Virtual Presentation

Have you ever asked yourself “I wish I had read that one!” or “I should read that one again!”? Book clubs are increasing, and reading can be a safe and productive activity during COVID. But why would you read or reread a book title termed classic? In 1986, Italo Calvino wrote: “A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say.”

This is your opportunity to join us as we start a new bimonthly book group on Tuesday nights beginning September 21. Our list of reads begins with Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. Copies of books to be discussed will be reserved for members of the group. Call the library to reserve your copy.
