  • Chinese Brush Painting for Older Adult

    Virtual Presentation

    This free online workshop for older adults meets “virtually” once a week for 6 weeks for 1.5 hours and is led by Jade Lam, Chinese brush painting artist. The class will explore the beauty and meaning of “ The Four Noble Plants” as well as Chinese landscape painting.

    September 23, 30 October 7, 14, 21, 28, Thursdays 2-3:30 pm

    Final Presentation and Celebration November 4

    No prior experience needed, materials will be provided but you will need:

  • Jews & Jazz: From Before the Beginning

    When one thinks of “Jews and jazz," names such as Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Stan Getz and others come to mind, American-born all. But what of the earlier generation of European-born Jewish musicians — klezmorim — who, upon arrival, were obliged to learn two new languages: English and jazz? How did they navigate through a new challenging soundscape to become viable parts of their new land?

    By examining the early “jazz” offerings of klezmer pioneers like Lt. Joseph Frankel, Harry Kandel, and Sammy Musiker among others, we witness how that first generation took to jazz as both a social and musical gateway to speed up their – and their audience’s — acculturation from old world to new.

    In 1967, at Sacramento City College, painter Fritz Scholder unveiled his new series, Real Indians. Going beyond stereotypical images of Native Americans, he portrayed his people as he knew them, with all of the harsh realities of Reservation life. One of his art students, T.C. Cannon, was also exploring these themes and their work and unique relationship remain controversial to this day. Please join us for a fascinating look into both Scholder and Cannon when Cliff Tisdell, fine artist and art lecturer, returns to DOROT.

    Join master storyteller and performer Judith Cohen, Ph.D., Canadian ethnomusicologist and musician, to hear and learn more about the beautiful, mystical sounds of Sephardic music from the greater Judeo-Spanish world.     Gee’s Bend, Alabama, is home to generations of extraordinary Black craftswomen whose quilts represent a crucial chapter in the history of American Art. Since the early 1800s, these women have transformed worn clothes, sacks, and other fabric remnants into patterns that surpass the boundaries of the genre.

    The Work of John Sloan: “I Have Soaked in Something to Paint”
    Thursday, October 14, 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM

    New York has inspired many works of art, but arguably no artist has embraced the city more passionately than John Sloan—a Philadelphia newspaper illustrator turned painter who depicted New York at the dawn of the 20th Century, when immigrants crowded the Lower East Side, suffragists and socialists marched in the streets, and Greenwich Village was a center for the arts and dissent. On the 150th anniversary of Sloan’s birth, join Manhattan borough historian and Rutgers professor emeritus Robert Snyder for a look at Sloan’s life and art as one of the leading figures of the “Ashcan School,” a loose collection of artists who depicted everyday life in early 1900s New York.

    Together, we’ll explore Sloan’s art, his urban vision, his political commitments, and the places where he lived and worked in Manhattan—above all, Greenwich Village. Snyder, who has written widely on New York City, is co-author of Metropolitan Lives: The Ashcan Artists and Their New York.

  • A Bloody Reckoning: The Legacy of the Battle of Shiloh

    In April 1862, Confederate forces surprised Union forces at Pittsburg Landing, a small steamboat docking on the Tennessee River. The two armies faced off for control of the all-important Mississippi Valley knowing that victory could determine the outcome of the Civil War. The violent clash, which came to be known as the Battle of Shiloh, ended with 23,746 dead or wounded, forcing the citizens of a divided nation to reckon with the prospect of a war that was longer and bloodier than they had ever imagined. Ellen Snyder-Grenier, principal of REW & Co, is currently working for the National Park Service’s Shiloh National Military Park, and will guide us through this moment in American history.

    The program will focus on common scams and frauds that targets older adults – the warning signs, how to avoid becoming a victim, and where to seek help if you think you are a victim.
    There will be special emphasis on common telephone scams such as “grandparent,“ “Internal Revenue Service,” “unemployment,” “romance,” and “tech support” scams. The program will also cover issues such as identity theft and Internet safety. As a result, seniors will be provided with things to do and to avoid to stay safe in their daily lives, especially when social distancing remains common.

  • When the war came. Three households on the Palisades face the Civil War

    While no battles were fought in Hudson Valley, the effects of the Civil War were felt throughout the region. In the tiny riverfront settlement of Closter Landing on the NJ Palisades around a dozen men volunteered for the Union. Historical Interpreter Eric Nelsen investigates three of these households, each headed by a widow whose sons went off to fight.

  • BanJew: The Secret History of the Banjo in Yiddish Music

    Virtual Presentation

    The mass emigration of Eastern European Jews to the United States in the late 19th Century occurred when the banjo was a dominant force in popular music. While Jews did not become involved in the older more established worlds of minstrel banjo or the later classic finger-style banjo, the newly emerging worlds of ragtime and jazz offered an unfettered ground floor for this new collaboration. Join us to hear how the banjo became a mainstream Jewish presence in the Yiddish theater and traditional klezmer bands. Learn how our presenter, the producer and performer Henry Sapoznik, reintroduced the banjo in the mid-1970s klezmer “revival” and its subsequent worldwide renaissance.

  • Historic Harlem: 1600s thru the 1920’s & Beyond

    Join us for a very picturesque prowl through historic Harlem, once a bucolic estate setting for gracious mansions, later a hub for European immigrants, and then the destination of southern Blacks fleeing Jim Crow and migrating to the North in pursuit of jobs and rights. Together we'll visit settings associated with all of these phases of Harlem's history, while concentrating on the emergence of the Harlem Renaissance. We will 'walk' past Sylvan Terrace, the Morris-Jumel mansion, the Triple Nickel, Trinity Church Cemetery, Hamilton Grange, Hamilton Heights, the historic City College campus, Strivers Row, and the Abyssinian Baptist Church, and see sites where well-known Harlem residents lived. We'll end this enlightening tour at a special pavilion to view historic WPA era murals depicting the lives of Harlem's Black residents. Led by Deb Zelcer, Prowler Tours

  • Conversation with Author and Illustrator Peter Sis

    Join us for a conversation with celebrated author and illustrator Peter Sis. An exhibit showing Peter Sis’ works-in-progress will be held simultaneously in Putnam Valley Free Library’s Community Room.

    The recipient of numerous awards, Peter Sis is, among other things, a seven-time winner of The New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year and a three times Caldecott Honoree. He is the first children’s book illustrator to win the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship.

    Peter Sis’ newest book, Nicky & Vera: A Quiet Hero of the Holocaust and the Children He Rescued, tells the story of Nicky (Nicholas Winston), a quiet Englishman who, in December 1938, cancelled his vacation to go to Prague, where he ultimately organized the transportation of almost 700 children to safety. He never told anyone, until 50 years later, his wife discovered his records, kept in boxes in the attic.

    Peter Sís weaves Nicky’s experiences and the story of one of the children he saved, Vera Gissing. “The story unfolds on parallel tracks, beginning, for both Nicky and Vera — an unusual and exquisite narrative choice — in childhood. Born into different worlds, they intersect briefly at one crucial moment in time, then split apart before coming together again at the end” (Jennifer Krauss, The New York Times).

    Joseph Cornell spent his early years in Nyack, NY, living an upper-middle class lifestyle. His father’s untimely death in 1917 forced Cornell to help his mother and siblings. He spent many years working as a fabric salesman in New York City to support them. Working out of their humble home in Queens while taking care of his mother and disabled brother, Cornell became one of the most original American artists of the twentieth century. Join artist and educator Cliff Tisdell for a closer look into the life and artwork of Cornell.

    Meet cheesemongers, bakers, baristas, grocers, and restaurateurs on this virtual tour of the Essex Market on Manhattan's Lower East Side. This historic market was opened in 1940 as part of Mayor LaGuardia's citywide program to build new wholesale and retail food markets, and get pushcarts off the streets. In 2019, the market moved into a beautiful new facility on the south side of Delancey Street that boasts over 40 purveyors of prepared foods, specialty items, and grocery staples. We'll learn about the market's history and go live to Essex Market to visit with a diverse range of small businesses that call the market home today.     The next concert of the Ullendorff series will feature a very enjoyable program from violinist Juliette Kang and cellist Thomas Kraines. The program will include a cheerful Mozart violin and cello duet, a contemplative solo Bach on the cello, a thrilling violin solo work by Ysaye, and the highly virtuosic Handel-Halvorsen duet, plus a few extra short pieces for our enjoyment.     In this epic biography of Edward Lansdale (1908– 1987), the man said to be the fictional model for Graham Greene’s The Quiet American, best-selling historian Max Boot demonstrates how Lansdale pioneered a “hearts and mind” diplomacy, first in the Philippines, then in Vietnam. It was a visionary policy that, as Boot reveals, was ultimately crushed by America’s giant military bureaucracy, steered by elitist generals and blueblood diplomats who favored troop build-ups and napalm bombs over winning the trust of the people.
