  • World’s Fair 1964-65

    Virtual Presentation

The 1964-65 World’s Fair held in Flushing Meadow, Queens was the brainchild of Robert Moses, but was also the testing ground of ideas for Walt Disney to use in Disneyland and in his newest planned creation, Disney World. The fair was the place where countries, states and industries came together on one site to show off the best things they had to offer. The exhibits ranged from a ride into the future, to a look back at our past, to a boat ride around the world led by children. It was a place where you could view Michaelangelo’s Pieta and a scale model miniature of New York City, and then sample foods from all over the nation and the world. Through narration, pictures, audio and video, this presentation by Art and Susan Zuckerman will bring you back to that time to enjoy memories or to create new ones.

  • Hollywood’s Golden Age of Self Censorship

    Virtual Presentation

From the 1930s to the 1960s, Hollywood censored itself. The Production Code is often remembered as a quaint document that ensured married couples slept in separate beds on screen. But the Production Code was a more complex contract between Hollywood and its diverse global audience. It led filmmakers to create a code for representing sex, violence, and extreme politics. And it helped Hollywood navigate the depression, the rise of Nazism, Soviet communism, World War II, the Cold War, and the Sixties. In late 1960s, Hollywood could no longer make films to address one global audience, and the industry moved from the Production Code to the Rating System. The code ended, but in many ways, the visual language created by the Production Code still informs the way stories are told on screen.

  • Women and Photography: 1924-1965

    Virtual Presentation

In pre-war Berlin and Paris, some young women who were part of the avant-garde movement were intrigued by the possibilities of a new new medium: photography. Unlike painting and sculpture, photography was full of new possibilities and still free of an established, male hierarchy. But the creative freedom these modern women were enjoying in Europe would soon be replaced by fascism. Some, including Lee Miller, would relocate to London, whereas others came to New York, where after the war, they would work for magazines before facing the realities of McCarthyism. Even though the groundbreaking work of these women still resonates today, only a few, like Berenice Abbott, would get some of the recognition they deserved in their lifetimes, others still remain in relative obscurity. We'll get a glimpse of Ephrussi’s collections including artworks by Fragonard, Morisot, Monet, Moreau, and Renoir. At the exhibition’s centerpiece is the extraordinary collection of Japanese netsuke, miniature carved sculptures of the Edo Period, hidden by a maid from German officials in her mattress during World War II, and later returned to the family. • The Night of the Red Moon: with Meterologist Joe Rao

    Virtual Presentation

All bodies in the solar system which receive light from the Sun cast a shadow into space. When the shadow of one body falls upon another, an eclipse occurs. When the Moon wanders into the shadow cast into space by our home planet, we are then treated to a lunar eclipse.

An eclipse of the Moon is a dramatic natural event which has been described in records going back for centuries in many civilizations. Ancient astronomers or wise men discovered certain cycles of occurances of eclipses, which then allowed prediction. Accurate prediction could then command power and prestige. On Sunday night, May 15th, a Total Eclipse of the Moon will take place. Here in the Northeast US, we will have ringside seats for this event, as the total phase of this eclipse will occur well up in the southern sky during the late evening hours. In this presentation we’ll provide all the details on how to best prepare for this remarkable celestial sight, as well as talk about other important eclipse events that will occur in the near future.

  • Author Talk: Nostalgia and American Jewish Religion

    Virtual Presentation

In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, American Jews have increasingly told nostalgic stories about Eastern European Jewish immigration to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. In her book Beyond the Synagogue: Jewish Nostalgia as Religious Practice, religious studies professor Rachel B. Gross examines American Jewish longing for the past expressed through artisanal delis, picture books, historic synagogues, and Jewish genealogy. She argues that these nostalgic activities should be understood as religious practices, illuminating how many American Jews are finding and making meaning within American Judaism today. We'll learn with Dr. Gross as she shows us how the embrace of nostalgia provides evidence of an alternative, under-appreciated way of being Jewish and of maintaining Jewish continuity.
