• Warrior Women *

    Virtual Presentation

*Special Movie Screening and Talkback Exclusively for DOROT*

    Screen at your Leisure
    Monday, May 16 - Thursday, May 26

    Talkback
    Thursday, May 26, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

We are honored to be able to present Warrior Women, the story of Madonna Thunder Hawk, an American Indian Movement leader who shaped a kindred group of activists' children - including her daughter Marcy - into the "We Will Remember" Survival School as a Native alternative to government-run education. Together, Madonna and Marcy fought for Native rights in an environment that made them more comrades than mother-daughter. Through their story, Warrior Women explores what it means to balance a movement with motherhood and how activist legacies are passed down from generation to generation.

After you view the film, join us with Dr. Elizabeth Castle, the founder and Executive Director of The Warrior Women Oral History Project, who will lead our Talkback. We may also be joined by a special guest--you won't want to miss this very special opportunity.

    Virtual Presentation

Join the conversation with DOROT members and award-winning poet and longtime DOROT instructor Jessica Greenbaum. We will spend time each week with a few poems that aim to offer poetry’s glorious array of powers. The theme of the poems we read will flow with the curiosity of the class, hoping to invite and encourage everyone to partake of this free-to-all art. No previous experience needed, of course! We look forward to being together on screen in the ways we can be (please keep your cameras on if possible!) and getting to know each other through our shared thoughts and questions.

  • 20th-Century Ukrainian Artists: Pioneers of Modernity

    Virtual Presentation

What do artists Sonia Delaunay, Vladimir Baranov-Rossiné, Alexander Archipenko, Chaim Gross, Ben Zion, and Louise Nevelson have in common? They are all pioneers of modern Western Art who came from Ukraine. They left their birth country for political reasons and joined international art centers in Paris and New York. There they developed new artistic languages and broke down boundaries between mediums. Their innovations included fabric art, wood carving, early assemblage, and light projections. While they worked abroad and were part of an international art scene, memories of Ukrainian costumes, dance, landscape, and colors informed their art. Led by Art Historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo

Mallory Mortillaro serves as the Curator of Collections for the Hartley Dodge Foundation in Madison, NJ. • Honoring Indigenous Futures with Storytelling: Oil & Water

Field Library 4 Nelson Ave., Peekskill, United States

Join Brooklyn Demme, son of the late Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs & Philadelphia), to watch and discuss two documentary shorts, "Protection Not Protest" and "The Community of the River Wachirpas." Each thought-provoking film depicts indigenous communities' inspiring struggle to secure clean water from contamination by the oil industry.

Protection Not Protest: The People of Standing Rock

In 2016, the Lakota people of the Standing Rock Reservation had to defend their watershed and sacred burial sites from an invading oil company. This short and impactful film by Academy Award winner Jonathan Demme listens to the voices of the water protectors urging us to defend the sacred.

The Community of the River Wachirpas

This intimate short film brings viewers into the heart of the Amazon, where oil contamination is risking the lives and culture of an Achuar community living on the Wachirpas River. They are requesting our help to purchase a water-purification system, which proceeds from this event will help them implement and save many lives.
