• Art History Talk: NYC Street Art

    Virtual Presentation

Starting as the way for inner city youth to make their presence felt and their voices heard, street art soon developed clear artistic styles and entered the realms of fine art and high end design. While illegal tagging is still being practiced, some neighborhoods are inviting street artists to paint their walls to push gentrification and murals are taking on the important functions of instantaneous community memorials, protest and celebration. Together we will look at early historic street artists, important NY neighborhoods and projects, giants in the contemporary field, dominant themes and a sampling of some striking projects, including responses to the pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement of 2020. • ‘The Times They Were a-Changin’: Jewish Protest Singers of the 1960s

    Virtual Presentation

Musicians ranging from Bob Dylan to Phil Ochs to Janis Ian to Country Joe and the Fish (plus Tom Lehrer, Si Kahn, Paul Simon, Jefferson Airplane) wrote and sang songs that became anthems of the civil rights, antiwar, and women’s movements, among other expressions of political protest. Together we'll examine how these Jewish artists addressed many of the same issues their Yiddish forebears tackled just a few decades earlier and how Jewish values seem to have informed their work. We'll also take a look at how non-Jews including Pete Seeger and Joan Baez wound up being the caretakers of the tradition and transitional figures in bringing Yiddish protest music alive as part of the folk revival. • Women and Photography: 1924-1965

    Virtual Presentation

In pre-war Berlin and Paris, some young women who were part of the avant-garde movement were intrigued by the possibilities of a new new medium: photography. Unlike painting and sculpture, photography was full of new possibilities and still free of an established, male hierarchy. But the creative freedom these modern women were enjoying in Europe would soon be replaced by fascism. Some, including Lee Miller, would relocate to London, whereas others came to New York, where after the war, they would work for magazines before facing the realities of McCarthyism. Even though the groundbreaking work of these women still resonates today, only a few, like Berenice Abbott, would get some of the recognition they deserved in their lifetimes, others still remain in relative obscurity. • The Jewish Museum Virtual Tour: The Hare with Amber Eyes

    Virtual Presentation

The Hare with Amber Eyes evokes the story of the Ephrussi family—celebrated in the 2010 memoir and The New York Times bestseller of the same name by Edmund de Waal—and showcases the breadth and depth of their illustrious collection. This exhibition explores the family’s rise to prominence in the first half of the nineteenth century, to the inter-war years, and finally, World War II, when they lost their fortune and collection to Nazi looting. We'll get a glimpse of Ephrussi’s collections including artworks by Fragonard, Morisot, Monet, Moreau, and Renoir. At the exhibition’s centerpiece is the extraordinary collection of Japanese netsuke, miniature carved sculptures of the Edo Period, hidden by a maid from German officials in her mattress during World War II, and later returned to the family. • Author Talk: Nostalgia and American Jewish Religion

    Virtual Presentation

In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, American Jews have increasingly told nostalgic stories about Eastern European Jewish immigration to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. In her book Beyond the Synagogue: Jewish Nostalgia as Religious Practice, religious studies professor Rachel B. Gross examines American Jewish longing for the past expressed through artisanal delis, picture books, historic synagogues, and Jewish genealogy. She argues that these nostalgic activities should be understood as religious practices, illuminating how many American Jews are finding and making meaning within American Judaism today. We'll learn with Dr. Gross as she shows us how the embrace of nostalgia provides evidence of an alternative, under-appreciated way of being Jewish and of maintaining Jewish continuity.

We are honored to be able to present Warrior Women, the story of Madonna Thunder Hawk, an American Indian Movement leader who shaped a kindred group of activists' children - including her daughter Marcy - into the "We Will Remember" Survival School as a Native alternative to government-run education. Together, Madonna and Marcy fought for Native rights in an environment that made them more comrades than mother-daughter. Through their story, Warrior Women explores what it means to balance a movement with motherhood and how activist legacies are passed down from generation to generation.

After you view the film, join us with Dr. Elizabeth Castle, the founder and Executive Director of The Warrior Women Oral History Project, who will lead our Talkback. We may also be joined by a special guest--you won't want to miss this very special opportunity.

    Virtual Presentation

What do artists Sonia Delaunay, Vladimir Baranov-Rossiné, Alexander Archipenko, Chaim Gross, Ben Zion, and Louise Nevelson have in common? There they developed new artistic languages and broke down boundaries between mediums. Their innovations included fabric art, wood carving, early assemblage, and light projections. While they worked abroad and were part of an international art scene, memories of Ukrainian costumes, dance, landscape, and colors informed their art. Led by Art Historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo
